Major Beamishasked the Minister of Education whether she is aware that the Workers' Educational Association is distributing on a large scale a pamphlet entitled "Britain Unites Against Commercial T.V.," which has been issued by an organisation called the National Television Council, the main object of which is opposition to the Government's proposals for ending the British Broadcasting Corporation's monopoly; what is the amount of the annual subsidy given to the Workers' Educational Association to support its work; and how far the granting of this subsidy is conditional on the non-political character of the Workers' Educational Association.
§ Miss HorsbrughI have no evidence that this document is being widely distributed by the Workers' Educational Association. The grants from my Department to the various districts of the Workers' Educational Association for the year 1951–52 were £63,877. They are paid on the teaching costs of an approved programme of classes. The Association's activities, other than its organised class work in respect of which my grants are given, are paid for out of its own funds and are not my concern.
