HC Deb 17 December 1953 vol 522 cc83-4W
62. Mr. Awbery

asked the Minister of Education the estimated shortage of science teachers in schools; what information she has of the percentage of students leaving college who take up the teaching of science and go into industry, respectively; and what steps are being taken to man fully our schools with science teachers.

Miss Horsbrugh

My best information on the first two parts of the Question is contained in Tables I and III of a report of the National Advisory Council on the Training and Supply of Teachers, of which I am sending the hon. Member a copy. The report contains a number of suggestions for stimulating recruitment, most of which require consultation with other interests. I am starting these consultations at once.

80. Mr. J. Johnson

asked the Minister of Education whether she has considered the interim report of the National Advisory Council in the training and supply of teachers; and what action she proposes in this matter.

Miss Horsbrugh

I would refer the hon. Member to the reply I have just given to the hon. Member for Bristol, Central (Mr. Awbery).
