§ 83. Mr. Osborneasked the President of the Board of Trade what effect the recent amendment to the Customs Act, which will give the Canadian textile industry increased protection from imports will have upon imports from Britain; and what negotiations he has had with the Canadian Government on this matter.
§ Mr. P. ThorneycroftI assume that my hon. Friend is referring to the amendment to Section 35 of the Canadian Customs Act. I understand that this amendment is designed to give Canadian manufacturers increased protection against textiles imported at abnormally low end-of-season prices. I have no reason to believe that the amendment is likely to have adverse effects on our trade. I have not received any representations from exporters on this subject and heavy seasonal reductions in price are not a feature of our textile exports to Canada. We have had no negotiations with Canada on this matter.
