HC Deb 10 December 1953 vol 521 c276W
114. Mr. Russell

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what steps are taken to ensure that Customs duty has been paid on motor vehicles imported into this country before they are licensed.

Mr. Boyd-Carpenter

The ordinary machinery for ensuring the payment of Customs duty upon chargeable goods at the time of their importation applies to motor cars as to other goods. The issue of motor vehicle licences is the responsibility of local registration and licensing authorities, and I am afraid that I have no information as to the steps they take before issuing a licence.
