asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies how many non-Malayan and, in particular, how many Chinese have been appointed to the administrative branch of the Malayan Civil Service in the last year since the Service was open to all races.

Mr. Lyttelton

Three Chinese and one Ceylonese have been appointed to the Malayan Civil Service in the last year. Two other non-Malays could have been appointed if suitable candidates had come forward.
