HC Deb 08 December 1953 vol 521 c211W
86. Mr. Lee

asked the Minister of Labour whether any change can yet be announced that will enable a young man called up for National Service to opt for a three-year period in the Regular Army in order to remain at his own trade, and still retain his rights to reinstatement in his civil occupation.

Mr. Watkinson

As the hon. Member is no doubt aware, this could not be done without legislation. The proposal raises some difficult questions which I am examining, and I hope to write to him shortly.
