asked the Secretary of State for Scotland the total value of Government grants made towards the cost of land. drainage projects in each year since the war, in Scotland and Lanarkshire, respectively.

The amounts paid in grant during the financial years 1945 to 1953 for hill, field and arterial drainage in Scotland and Lanarkshire, respectively, are as follow:

Owners and occupiers of agricultural land, who undertake approved drainage works, may obtain a Government grant amounting to 50 per cent. of the cost of the work.
