HC Deb 03 December 1953 vol 521 c153W
58. Mr. Gower

asked the Minister of Labour the latest available figures of iron and steel workers made redundant in the parts of South Wales adjacent to Swansea and Llanelly; how many of these men have found other suitable employment; what is the estimated number of men reported to him as required for certain works reopened or shortly to be reopened in this area; and if he will make a statement.

Sir W. Monckton

Since the beginning of the year nearly 5,000 workers have become redundant in the tinplate area of west South Wales. About 1,250 of these transferred to other tinplate mills and about 1,850 found alternative work through the employment exchanges in the neighbourhood. On 18th November only 138 remained registered locally as unemployed.

The tinplate mills which have already reopened and those which, it is hoped, will reopen shortly, are expected to require nearly 550 workers, of whom 337 have already been engaged.
