HC Deb 03 December 1953 vol 521 cc154-5W
62. Mr. Gower

asked the Minister of Labour how many persons were registered as unemployed in the county of Glamorgan and in the borough of Barry on the last date for which figures are available; the estimated number of people in employment in Glamorgan and Barry, respectively; and if he will make a statement.

Sir W. Monckton

At 16th November, 11,917 persons were registered as unemployed in the county of Glamorgan, including 500 at Barry. At the end of May, 1952 (the latest date for which figures are available), the estimated number of persons in employment (excluding permanent civil servants) was 446,000 in the county of Glamorgan including 16,700 in the Barry area (including Llantwit-Major).

A good deal has been done in recent years to provide new employment opportunities in Glamorgan and the Government will continue its efforts to increase the level of employment in the area.
