HC Deb 03 December 1953 vol 521 c154W
61. Mrs. Mann

asked the Minister of Labour if he is aware of rising unemployment in Coatbridge and particularly in Victoria, Waverley, Coats, Martins and the Rivet Bolt and Nut Company works in that area; and what remedial steps are being taken to deal with this situation.

Sir W. Monckton

Yes, there has been some rise in unemployment at Coatbridge in the last month or two but it is still substantially lower than at the beginning of the year. There has been some short-time working in recent months at the five works to which the hon. Member refers due to changes in demand. I will continue to watch the position and the employment exchange will do its best to place those workers in need of alternative employment.
