HC Deb 03 December 1953 vol 521 cc167-8W
102. Mr. Morley

asked the Minister of Education the number of children on the registers of Church of England, Roman Catholic, and Jewish aided schools; and what percentage that number is of the total number of children on the registers of all schools under her jurisdiction to the nearest convenient date.

Miss Horsbrugh

In January, 1953, the numbers on the registers of voluntary aided, controlled, special agreement and transitionally assisted primary and secondary schools were: Church of England, 998,271; Roman Catholic 428,902; and Jewish 2,096. These figures represented 16.1, 6.9 and 0.03 per cent. respectively of the total number of children at that date on the registers of maintained and assisted primary and secondary schools other than nursery or special schools. Separate figures are not available for aided schools.
