HC Deb 02 December 1953 vol 521 cc129-30W
18. Mr. Hector Hughes

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs if he is aware that 37 members of the crew of the British ship, "Greystoke Castle," were arrested in San Francisco last Friday; and if he will make a statement, giving the reason for this action and where the arrested members of the crew now are.

Mr. Selwyn Lloyd

When the United States authorities refused to permit 37 Nationalist Chinese members of the crew of the "Greystoke Castle" to land at San Francisco on 24th November, the crew staged a sit-down strike and later went on to the quay and were detained by the immigration authorities. After consultation with representatives of the owners and the British and Chinese Nationalist Consulates, all 37 returned quietly on board and resumed duty. The ship sailed on 28th November with a full crew and in normal order.
