HC Deb 30 April 1953 vol 514 c117W
63. Sir W. Wakefield

asked the Minister of Education whether she is aware of the concern felt by many technological institutes and other professional bodies in the country, at the low standard of knowledge of the English language of many of the candidates presenting themselves for associateship of such bodies; and whether, at an early date, she will arrange for consultation with local education authorities with a view to finding means for remedying this state of affairs.

Miss Horsbrugh

Yes. But while I agree that improvement is desirable, I think the shortcomings are sometimes exaggerated. I know that local education authorities and teachers are giving much thought to this matter. As one way of helping them my Department is preparing a pamphlet dealing with the teaching of language in all types of educational establishments, and a special section will deal with the use of English by technical students.
