11. Mrs. Whiteasked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what steps have been taken recently to improve radio programmes for Africans in Kenya, with a view to stimulating a wider interest in what might become a valuable means of adult education.
§ Mr. LytteltonOn the one hand broadcasting to Africans in vernacular languages has recently been increased by six hours to a total of 34¾ hours weekly. "Lunch-time" programmes especially directed to African urban workers have started, and broadcasting staff has been increased. On the other the number of Government-owned sets on loan in suitable centres has been increased to 350 (from 289 in February). A loudspeaker relay system has been installed at Nakuru, and in Nairobi 30 public loudspeakers are installed.
