asked the Minister of Food whether, in view of the fact that he has been able to purchase 235,000 tons of soft-currency sugar during the current year from Formosa and San Domingo, he will state to what extent such additional supplies will enable him to increase supplies of sugar to housewives and manufacturers this year; and what additional sources of such soft-currency sugar he anticipates being able to find in the near future.

Purchases from Formosa and other foreign non-dollar sources have been a welcome supplement to our imports of sugar from the Commonwealth, but they were not sufficient without the special purchase of Cuban sugar which was announced on 14th April to enable sugar to be derationed soon.
