HC Deb 02 April 1953 vol 513 cc174-5W
Sir G. Hutchinson

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will make arrangements for the Commissioner of Police to furnish substitutes for school crossing patrols where the latter are absent through illness or other causes, in view of the fact that parents, particularly in built-up areas, have come to rely upon the presence of a crossing patrol at the crossings used by schoolchildren.

Sir D. Maxwell Fyfe

The Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis endeavours wherever possible to provide temporary control by a policeman or a police cadet where a school crossing patrol is absent through illness or other cause. If the police cannot provide a substitute, the school authorities concerned are informed so that they may if possible improvise temporary arrangements, or at any rate, warn the children to exercise special care in the absence of a patrol.
