HC Deb 02 April 1953 vol 513 cc186-7W
Major Hicks Beach

asked the Minister of Transport whether he is now prepared to approve the reconstruction of Pilley Bridge, Cheltenham.

Mr. Braithwaite

Yes. Since the temporary wooden footbridge will shortly need to be repaired or replaced, my right hon. Friend is now prepared in order to avoid abortive expenditure to authorise the Railway Executive to build a vehicular bridge to the size of the bridge destroyed by enemy action in 1940, but in existing economic circumstances he is unable to make grant available towards the construction of a bridge of greater than pre-war dimensions.
