HC Deb 21 October 1952 vol 505 cc96-7W
114. Mr. Awbery

asked the Secretary of State for War how many claims by the civilian employees of the War Department are now under consideration in Singapore; how long it is since they were submitted by the trade unions; and what hopes he can give of a speedy settlement of these grievances.

Mr. Head

As the hon. Member knows, there is one outstanding claim affecting the War Department civilian storekeepers in Singapore which is being handled in this country and which I am most anxious to bring to an early conclusion. I am unaware of any other claims by these civilian employees which are under consideration by the military authorities in Singapore.

115. Mr. Awbery

asked the Secretary of State for War why no consultation took place with the trade unions when 70 men were recently dismissed by the War Department in Singapore; to what extent length of service was considered when selecting these men; and how many of the men dismissed had over five years' service.

Mr. Head

I called for an urgent report on this matter as soon as I heard of it. I have just received a detailed report and will write to the hon. Member when I have considered it.
