HC Deb 04 March 1952 vol 497 c26W
78. Mr. Manuel

asked the Minister of Works why he is refusing sanction for the restoration of the George Cinema, Beith, destroyed by fire.

Mr. Eccles

In order to direct building resources to more essential work a ban was imposed last June on the issue of licences over £5,000 for places of entertainment. I regret that there can be no general relaxation until conditions improve. There is an acute shortage of building labour in this area and reconstruction of the George Cinema, which would cost £20,000, would delay essential work, including housing.
