HC Deb 04 March 1952 vol 497 cc26-7W
Mr. Grimond

asked the Minister of Works when it is proposed to re-erect the memorial to the leaders of the antislavery movement formerly in Parliament Square; and where it is proposed to place it.

Mr. Eccles

The site for the re-erection of the Buxton Fountain has not yet been selected. In accordance with the provisions of the Parliament Square (Improvements) Act, 1949, it will be necessary to obtain the consent of Parliament to any alternative site. If the fountain is re-erected elsewhere, I have been asked by the Anti-Slavery Society to commemorate, at their expense, by means of a tablet in Parliament Square, the abolition of the slave trade in 1807 and the emancipation of slaves under the British flag in 1833, and the part played by Parliament in these notable measures.

It has been suggested that this commemorative tablet should stand at the north-east corner of St. Margaret's Churchyard and I have given instructions for a model to be prepared so that Parliament and the public may judge of the suitability of the site and the tablet.
