HC Deb 21 February 1952 vol 496 c68W
Mr. Erroll

asked the Minister of Food what savings of staff and money he estimates could be made in local national registration and food offices by the termination of national registration; and when these could be effected.

Major Lloyd George

Our estimate is that some 1,500 staff, costing about £500,000 a year, may be saved by the ending of National Registration. Staff will be released as quickly as possible. But in most offices National Registration work has formed only a small part of the duties of the food office clerks and some re-organisation will therefore be necessary. Moreover most of the staff affected will be retained until the end of May to help in the issue of ration books in place of a corresponding number of casual staff. Staff savings will consequently be spread over a period of several months.
