HC Deb 04 February 1952 vol 495 c90W
122. Mr. F. Willey

asked the First Lord of the Admiralty what quantities of steel are being allocated to the shipbuilding and ship-repairing industries; and whether this will ensure that the present volume of work will be maintained.

Mr. Digby

The Iron and Steel Distribution Order comes into operation today, and for the period ending 31st March each of the shipbuilding yards has been given an authorisation to acquire steel representing its fair share of the total tonnage of steel allocated to the shipbuilding industry. The effect of this allocation on the industry as a whole will be a relatively small curtailment on the present output of new merchant tonnage. The ship repairing yards will be allocated the steel necessary to meet the reasonable requirements of the work in progress.
