HC Deb 04 February 1952 vol 495 cc90-1W
124. Wing Commander Bullus

asked the Secretary for Overseas Trade, as representing the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster, how many tons of cadmium have been stolen from his Department in recent months; and what steps he is taking to prevent further thefts.

Mr. Hopkinson

A consignment of 7½ tons of cadmium was stolen on 24th January on its way from the London Docks to a storage depot. Approximately 7 tons have so far been recovered, and an arrest has been made. This is the only theft of Government-owned cadmium which has occurred. Discussions are proceeding with the police authorities as to any further action which can be taken to safeguard valuable materials in transit. No financial loss will be incurred by the Ministry as a result of the theft as it was covered by the haulage company's insurance policy.
