HC Deb 09 December 1952 vol 509 cc51-2W
Mr. Llewellyn

asked the Minister of Education whether she will make a statement about recent tests for deafness among children in South Wales; and how far it is proposed to extend the range of these tests.

Miss Horsbrugh

I assume that my hon. Friend has in mind the tests carried out during 1951 in South-East Glamorgan, to which reference was recently made in the Press. I understand that these were part of a survey of all children in the county between seven and 12 years of age which the authority are making as part of their statutory duty to ascertain which children need special educational treatment on account of defective hearing. Some other authorities are already carrying out similar surveys, and I hope that this practice will become general.
