Mr. de Freitas

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what was the authorised establishment and the strength of the Metropolitan Police on 1st November, 1951.

Mr. Sir D. Maxwell Fyfe

On 1st November the authorised establishment of the Metropolitan Police was 19,688 men and 388 women, and the effective strength (excluding persons seconded or serving overseas) was 15,489 men and 352 women.

Mr. de Freitas

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how much rent allowance he estimates will be paid during the current financial year to members of the Metropolitan Police.

Sir D. Maxwell Fyfe

£1,019,000 including £186,000 by way of compensatory grant to reimburse Income Tax paid on rent allowances.
