asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will give the figures showing the total cost of the Armed Forces and the re-armament programme in this country in 1951, and this total expressed as a cost per head of the working population, respectively.

In the last Budget speech the cost of defence and Civil Defence in the financial year 1951–52 was estimated at about £1,295 million. This total expressed as a cost per head of the working population is approximately £55.
