HC Deb 22 November 1951 vol 494 cc69-70W
84. Mr. W. W. Astor

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many officers have graduated from the Police College since its reorganisation after the war; and how many of these have been recommended as suitable for appointment as chief constables.

Sir D. Maxwell Fyfe

One thousand, three hundred and ten members of police forces in England and Wales have completed courses at the Police College and 181 will complete courses next month. The objects of the college are to broaden the outlook and improve the professional knowledge of officers in the middle and higher ranks of the police service, but it is not a function of the college to recommend individuals for particular appointments. I may say, however, that up to the end of 1950 1,010 officers had attended the college and 652 of these had been promoted.

The college also accepts a limited number of students from colonial and other police forces. One hundred and twenty such students have completed courses and 30 will do so next month.
