HC Deb 20 November 1951 vol 494 cc21-2W
68. Mr. Lewis

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he is aware of the unfair burden placed upon old age pensioners and those of limited means who have to have battery-operated wireless sets in the purchase of new batteries at excessive Purchase Tax charges; and whether he will exempt these batteries from Purchase Tax for all old age pensioners on production of their pension order book to the extent of four batteries per year.

Mr. R. A. Butler

I regret that I cannot adopt the hon. Member's proposal, but I have noted the effect of the Purchase Tax on the price of radio batteries. For the rest I cannot anticipate the Budget.
