HC Deb 19 November 1951 vol 494 c10W
Dr. Stross

asked the Minister of Food if he will give a list of the bleachers and/or improvers of flour which are under consideration as substitutes for the agene process; whether ascorbic acid is one of these; and when it is expected that the toxic substance agene will be forbidden.

Major Lloyd George

As stated in my reply to the hon. Member for Huntingdon (Mr. Renton) on 12th November, a joint examination of the possible alternatives to the agene process is at present being undertaken by the Departments concerned in association with representatives of the milling and baking industries. Until I have a report of this examination, I cannot furnish the hon. Member with a full list of the substitutes under consideration. The date of discontinuation of the present agene treatment will depend on the outcome of this investigation.
