HC Deb 19 November 1951 vol 494 cc7-8W
77. Lieut.-Colonel Lockwood

asked the Minister of Food when he will have completed negotiations with the National Farmers' Union with a view to ensuring that calves destined for slaughter will go direct to the nearest slaughterhouse instead of going to the local market.

Major Lloyd George

I am unaware of the negotiations to which my hon. and gallant friend refers. The present arrangements for the marketing of calves for slaughter, including those for avoiding cruelty to very young animals, are based on agreements with the National Farmers' Union and appear to be working satisfactorily.
