HC Deb 13 November 1951 vol 493 c29W
114. Mr. Watkinson

asked the Minister of Labour if he will give the figures for unemployed workers and those on short time or part time at the latest convenient date.

Sir W. Monckton:

At 15th October there were 263,756 unemployed persons on the registers of employment exchanges in Great Britain. The total number of workpeople on short-time is not known, but at establishments in manufacturing industries from which returns were received in respect of the week ended 22nd September the number on short-time in that week was 66,000. Estimates of the numbers of women normally working part-time, that is less than 30 hours a week, are available only for the manufacturing industries, the distributive and catering trades, laundries and cleaning and certain other services. The total number at 22nd September, 1951, for all these industries and services was 655,000.
