asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how much land is farmed by his Department of Agriculture.

Mr. J. Stuart:

The Department of Agriculture farm 131,917 acres of land, consisting in the main of hill farming subjects.

Mr. H. Fraser

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland how much land is owned by his Department of Agriculture and, of this, how much is devoted to forestry, farming and smallholding use, respectively.

Mr. J. Stuart:

'The Secretary of State owns 508,057 acres of land under agricultural powers. Land settlement estates account for 456,569 acres and the remainder is held for farming use. Woodland areas extend to just over 2,000 acres. In addition, the Secretary of State owns 973,787 acres of land under forestry powers: of this land the Department of Agriculture at present factor or farm 263,419 acres. The remaining area, which includes 289,331 acres actually under trees, is managed by the Forestry Commission.
