HC Deb 10 May 1951 vol 487 cc239-40W
Mr. Ewart

asked the President of the Board of Trade what is the number of male and female personnel, respectively, employed in new industries established since 1945 in Sunderland; and what provision is being made to further increase employment.

Sir H. Shawcross

About 2,400 men and 4,200 women are now employed in new industries established on Wearside since 1945. The firms concerned estimate that work for an additional 1,700 men and 270 women will be provided in factories already completed and under construction in the same area when they are in full production. Within the limits set by the need to restrict new building to projects of national mportance, everything possible is being done to bring new industry to this area, particularly industry which will provide employment for men.
