HC Deb 03 May 1951 vol 487 cc159-60W
Mr. Vane

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department the period of time during which, and conditions under which, employers of foreign workers entering this country may be required to defray the cost of the return passage.

Mr. Ede

Before an employer can secure a permit from the Ministry of Labour and National Service to bring in a foreigner from abroad for a post, he is required to give an unqualified undertaking to meet the cost of the foreigner's repatriation if called on to do so. There is no time limit to this undertaking, but it is the practice to release the employer from it if the foreigner after arrival receives permission to enter other employment, or to remain here for some other purpose.
