HC Deb 21 March 1951 vol 485 c289W
80. Mr. Braine

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies what steps it is proposed to take to encourage the practical application in the West Indies of the report on the industrial utilisation of sugar cane by-products recently issued by the Caribbean Commission.

Mr. J. Griffiths

The report is a summary of known methods of using these by-products. This question has been receiving constant attention for some time past, and a laboratory for the study of sugar technology including the use of by-products has just been opened at the Imperial College of Tropical Agriculture in Trinidad. The C.D.C. also have a mission in the West Indies inquiring into the use of bagasse for the manufacture of paper.
