HC Deb 19 March 1951 vol 485 c236W
Sir W. Smithers

asked the Minister of Food if he will now extend the principle of 4d. per lb. increase in the price of tea and a corresponding cut in subsidy to all articles of food, in order to enable the individual to spend his money as he wishes.

Mr. Webb

With the exceptions of bread, flour and milk, the quantities of subsidised foods available for purchase are regulated by rationing in order to ensure fair distribution. A change in the retail price of a particular rationed commodity does not imply any change in the range of rationed commodities which an individual is free to buy.
