HC Deb 19 March 1951 vol 485 c231W
92. Sir W. Smithers

asked the Minister of Food what steps he has taken to protect the retailers who took tins of brisling of which the price has now been cut by 43½ per cent. of what he paid for them; and what he paid for these tins.

Mr. F. Willey

The price reduction was made some months after the previous release of this variety of fish. The Ministry's purchases of brisling were made at an average f.o.b. price of about 60s. per case of 100 quarter tins.

93. Sir W. Smithers

asked the Minister of Food what gross profit per case is allowed to first-hand distributors for distributing brisling as sub-agents of his Department.

Mr. F. Willey

First-hand distributors of canned fish are not sub-agents of my Department. The margin allowed to them is 1s. 6d. per case on a sale to a wholesaler, 5s. 6d. per case on a sale to a retailer, and 4s. 3d. per case on a sale to a multiple retailer taking delivery at a central depot.
