HC Deb 15 March 1951 vol 485 c196W
79. Mr. Vosper

asked the Minister of Education what steps he is taking to ensure that children resident on canal boats receive an efficient, full-time education.

Mr. Tomlinson

There are two schools in Middlesex which cater specially for the education of canal boat children. In addition, I have asked the Birmingham local education authority to set up a boarding hostel for canal boat children so that they can attend ordinary day schools. I hope that this hostel will be ready in the autumn and that the canal boatmen will co-operate in making this experiment a success.
