HC Deb 13 March 1951 vol 485 c148W
125. Mr. J. Hudson

asked the Minister of Works what steps have been taken in the Palace of Westminster to economise in the use of fuel and electricity.

Mr. Stokes

Lighting in corridors and public places has been halved, by the removal of bulbs. Domestic hot water has been reduced in temperature by 20º F. All foot warmers and ceiling panels for heating on staircases and landings have been shut off. Half of the floor panels for heating have been shut off. Ceiling panels for lighting have been reduced by a quarter, except over the Strangers Gallery, where they have been reduced by two-thirds. These measures, together with a constant watch on unnecessary lights and radiators, have been in operation since the Christmas Recess and have resulted in a 10 per cent. saving on electricity and a 5 per cent saving on heating.
