HC Deb 05 March 1951 vol 485 c3W
43. Mr. Osborne

asked the Minister of Supply why he continues to operate three steel-making agencies which last year resulted in a net loss of £632,379; where they are situated; and how many people they employ.

Mr. G. R. Strauss

The works in question were retained in operation after the end of the war to assist in meeting the heavy post-war demand for steel. The works at Barrow, Barrow-in-Furness, employ about 2,000 people, those at Paisley now employ 200 people and the works at Leeds have ceased operation.
