HC Deb 26 June 1951 vol 489 c138W
Mr. Teeling

asked the Secretary of State for the Home Department what consideration he gave to the comparative rates of fares for taxis in Continental capitals, in London and in other towns in this country before raising the London prices.

Mr. Ede

As I have already explained, my decision was based on an examination of the costs of operating taxicabs in London: a comparison between London fares and fares in continental capitals or in other towns in this country is bound to be misleading, since there are important differences in the conditions or operation. It is, however, the case that the fares now in force in London compare favourably with the fares in force in a number of the provincial towns where fares are contained in by-laws which I have confirmed.
