HC Deb 26 June 1951 vol 489 cc132-3W
123. Mr. McGovern

asked the Lord Advocate if he is aware that an east end of Glasgow man was arrested on Saturday night charged with breach of the peace, conveyed to the police station by the police van and subsequently transferred to Glasgow Royal Infirmary, where he died; by what surgeon his death certificate was signed; the cause of death; and whether a public inquiry will be held on this case.

The Lord Advocate

I have received a preliminary report regarding the death of John Phillips, who, I presume, is the individual referred to in my hon. Friend's Question. A post mortem was carried out on the body of this man, which disclosed that death was due to alcoholic intoxication and oedema of the brain, and that dural adhesions, following upon an operation some two years ago for the removal of a cerebral tumour, were contributory factors. The death only occurred on 16th June, 1951, and a full report has not yet been submitted to me by the Procurator Fiscal. On receipt of the Procurator Fiscal's report I shall decide whether the circumstances call for a fatal accident inquiry.
