HC Deb 26 June 1951 vol 489 cc129-30W
Mr. Edward Davies

asked the Minister of Labour what facilities at present exist in North Staffordshire for the training and employment of disabled persons; and how far these facilities are being used.

Mr. Robens

In the pottery industry there are a number of vacancies for this purpose. In Government training centres and technical colleges in the Midlands there are training courses available in a wide variety of occupations and residential courses are provided in various parts of the country for more seriously disabled persons, including the blind. All these centres have vacancies. For severely disabled persons there are Remploy factories at Stoke-on-Trent, Longton and Newcastle-under-Lyme, at which 181 persons are at present employed. This provision will be extended as rapidly as possible. In May, 1951, there were 712 disabled persons unemployed in North Staffordshire compared with 1,096 a year earlier.
