91. Mr. Sorensen

asked the Minister of Labour what provision is made to supervise the working conditions of foreign girls employed in domestic and other work in this country and to enable those girls to secure redress or amelioration of unsuitable working conditions.

As my hon. Friend has previously been informed, local offices of my Department are ready in appropriate cases to inquire into questions raised with them by foreign workers regarding their employment. Where permission is required for the employment of foreign workers, permits are not granted unless the Ministry is satisfied that the proposed wages and other conditions of employment are not less favourable than those commonly accorded to British workers for similar work.
