asked the Minister of Fuel and Power why the stocks of coal for the domestic supplies in the Liverpool area have been allowed to be reduced to the point when coal merchants are unable to supply their customers with 1 cwt. of coal per week; what action he is taking against those responsible; and what has been done to restore the stocks of coal to meet current needs.

During the 12 months ended on 30th April, more coal was received in the Liverpool area than in the corresponding period a year ago. But during May the demand has been exceptionally heavy; supplies have been reduced by the Whitsun holidays; and there have been special difficulties about the transport of coal from opencast sites. Steps have been taken to increase the supplies, and I understand that the position has improved
