HC Deb 04 June 1951 vol 488 c63W
61. Mr. Gammans

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs how many British missionaries have been evacuated from China; what is the approximate number that remain; and what has happened to British missionary property in China.

Mr. Younger

I am informed that the number of British missionaries who have left China since the Central People's Government was set up is about 320, and the number still remaining there is about 125. These figures include missionaries' wives, but not their children. Many missions have made over their property to the Chinese Synod, a process which started many years ago and was largely completed before the establishment of the Central People's Government.
