HC Deb 02 July 1951 vol 489 cc176-7W
43. Mr. J. B. Hynd

asked the Minister of Supply whether his attention has been drawn to the wide repercussions on many essential industries caused by the closing down of sections of the Sheffield steel plants; to what extent this is affecting defence and urgent home production; and what steps are being taken to meet the situation.

Mr. G. R. Strauss

Yes. I know that the closing of sections of the Sheffield steel plants has caused dislocation of steel supplies. The needs of defence and essential civilian production will be safeguarded by the arrangements announced by my right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer last Thursday.
