HC Deb 02 July 1951 vol 489 cc184-5W
81. Mr. Osborne

asked the Minister of National Insurance if she is aware that a married woman in Louth, whose husband receives a maximum relief of £2 18s. 6d. per week as a disabled person, has been offered part-time employment by a local authority at 25s. per week, but is advised that if she works her husband's allowance will be reduced by 15s. a week; and in view of the fall in the purchasing power of the £ sterling since this regulation was imposed, if she will have the regulation reconsidered as a matter of urgency.

Dr. Summerskill

I am informed by the Board that the information given to the wife by the local office was not correct. Under the Statutory Regulations the assistance payable in this case would be adjusted only to the extent to which the wife's net earnings, after allowing for expenses, exceed 20s. a week.
