HC Deb 02 July 1951 vol 489 cc189-90W
97. Mrs. Ganley

asked the Minister of Food whether he is prepared to release any variety of sweets such as, for instance, coconut ice from surrender of points.

99. Mr. Yates

asked the Minister of Food whether he is aware that coconut ice is being sold off the ration by some traders to the detriment of others who are observing the regulations; and what action he proposes to take in the matter.

Mr. Webb

While I am anxious to deration all sweets as soon as supplies permit, I do not think that to release individual varieties from the ration piecemeal is the right course. I am glad of this opportunity to make clear to the public and to the traders concerned that for the purpose of my Department's rationing arrangements coconut ice is sugar confectionery and that I have instructed my officials to take appropriate action, including prosecution in all suitable cases, if it is sold off the ration.
