HC Deb 05 February 1951 vol 483 c166W
80. Mr. C. I. Orr-Ewing

asked the Minister of Food why he paid 10 times the pre-war price for the 10,000 tons of sunflower oil which he has recently bought from the Argentine.

Mr. Webb

This spot purchase of oil was made at a competitive price from a private trader in the ordinary course of commercial negotiations, just as we buy other oils from time to time on the open market to supplement the long-term contracts which provide the greater part of our supplies. We have no long-term contract with Argentina for oils.
